A practical guide to the 60 BaZi Types and the Day Pillar behind them
BaZi literally means Four Pillars. A person's birth year, month, day, and hour are each represented as a pillar. Each pillar consists of one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch — two characters. Four pillars x two characters = Eight Characters, forming the "Four Pillars of Destiny."

Among the four pillars, the Day Pillar becomes the foundation of your BaZi Type. The Hour Pillar shows children and later years, the Month Pillar shows parents and upbringing, and the Year Pillar shows ancestors and social environment. The Day Pillar most directly reflects your essential temperament and nature.
To understand how a BaZi Type is formed, you need to know the two building blocks: Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. Stems represent heavenly energy, while Branches represent earthly energy.

12 branches connected to zodiac animals, representing earthly energies. This is the system you may know as the Chinese zodiac.
When pairing the 10 Heavenly Stems with the 12 Earthly Branches sequentially, the cycle completes at 60 (the least common multiple of 10 and 12). This is the Sexagenary Cycle.
These 60 combinations cycle one per day. Every 60 days, the same birth-day combination repeats. For example, if today is "Jia-Zi day," that same combination returns in 60 days.
