How Is Your BaZi Type Determined?

A practical guide to the 60 BaZi Types and the Day Pillar behind them

1. Structure of Four Pillars

BaZi literally means Four Pillars. A person's birth year, month, day, and hour are each represented as a pillar. Each pillar consists of one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch — two characters. Four pillars x two characters = Eight Characters, forming the "Four Pillars of Destiny."

Among the four pillars, the Day Pillar becomes the foundation of your BaZi Type. The Hour Pillar shows children and later years, the Month Pillar shows parents and upbringing, and the Year Pillar shows ancestors and social environment. The Day Pillar most directly reflects your essential temperament and nature.

2. Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches

To understand how a BaZi Type is formed, you need to know the two building blocks: Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. Stems represent heavenly energy, while Branches represent earthly energy.

10 Heavenly Stems

Five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) each divided into Yang and Yin, creating 10 stems.

Jia
Yang Wood
Yi
Yin Wood
Bing
Yang Fire
Ding
Yin Fire
Wu
Yang Earth
Ji
Yin Earth
Geng
Yang Metal
Xin
Yin Metal
Ren
Yang Water
Gui
Yin Water

12 Earthly Branches

12 branches connected to zodiac animals, representing earthly energies. This is the system you may know as the Chinese zodiac.

Zi Rat
Chou Ox
Yin Tiger
Mao Rabbit
Chen Dragon
Si Snake
Wu Horse
Wei Sheep
Shen Monkey
You Rooster
Xu Dog
Hai Pig

3. Principle of the Sexagenary Cycle

When pairing the 10 Heavenly Stems with the 12 Earthly Branches sequentially, the cycle completes at 60 (the least common multiple of 10 and 12). This is the Sexagenary Cycle.

These 60 combinations cycle one per day. Every 60 days, the same birth-day combination repeats. For example, if today is "Jia-Zi day," that same combination returns in 60 days.

The Beginning of the Cycle

Jia-Zi → Yi-Chou → Bing-Yin → Ding-Mao → ... → Gui-Hai, completing 60 combinations. "Hwangap," reaching 60 years old, literally means "returning to Jia-Zi," celebrating the completion of one full cycle.

Your BaZi Type begins with one of these 60 birth-day combinations. People who share the same combination often show similar foundational temperaments.

4. What Your BaZi Type Can Reveal

Core Character

The Heavenly Stem in your birth-day combination hints at your essential tone. Jia feels like a tall tree — upright and dignified. Ding feels like candlelight — warm and delicate. Each stem carries a distinct mood and way of expressing energy.

Strengths & Blind Spots

The relationship between the two characters shapes where your energy flows smoothly and where it can become tense or sensitive. Supportive combinations amplify growth, while clashing ones can create pressure.

Aptitude & Work Style

The pattern in your birth-day combination helps show whether you lean toward study, execution, strategy, leadership, or creative expression, making it easier to suggest fitting career paths.

Compatibility & Relationships

Comparing BaZi Types can show which combinations support each other naturally and which tend to create friction. This helps explain chemistry, communication flow, and recurring tension points.

5. What is True Solar Time?

Standard clock time is based on a specific longitude for each time zone. In BaZi, True Solar Time — when the sun is actually at its highest point — is used to determine your birth-day combination.

Longitude Correction Principle

  • Korea Standard Time reference longitude: 135° E
  • Seoul's actual longitude: ~127°
  • Longitude difference: 135 - 127 = 8 degrees
  • Time correction: 8° x 4 min/degree = ~32 minutes
  • Seoul's true solar time is about 32 minutes behind standard time.

For births near midnight, this correction can change the BaZi Type result to the previous or current day, making it critically important.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How is a BaZi Type different from the Chinese zodiac animal?

The zodiac animal is a broader category based only on your birth year. A BaZi Type uses the two-character combination of your birth day. Even people born in the same year can end up with different BaZi Types depending on their exact birth date, which makes the reading much more personal.

Q. Can I use my lunar birthday?

BaZi Type calculation is based on the solar (Gregorian) calendar. If you only know your lunar birthday, you'll need to convert it to solar first. Search "lunar to solar calendar converter" online to find the correct date.

Q. Can a BaZi Type tell me everything about myself?

A BaZi Type is a focused lens built from the Day Pillar. It captures a very important layer of who you are, but a fuller reading still requires all four pillars together. Think of it as your personality DNA — meaningful, but not the whole picture.
